16-Year-Old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Prodigy Preparing for World Championships After Dominating Women's Adult Division at Pan American Championships

San Jose, CA, December 8, 2024 - Katernia Kalivitis, a student at Pioneer High School, recently secured an impressive double win at the renowned Jiu-Jitsu World League Championships in Long Beach, California, triumphing in both the gi and no-gi divisions of the adult competition.

Following a bullying incident, Katerina discovered a BJJ dojo, where she gained self-confidence by fully immersing herself in the "gentle art," highlighting the effectiveness of youth BJJ training and its potential to empower women through martial arts.

Competing against seasoned adult practitioners, Kalivitis showcased outstanding technique and poise throughout the tournament, earning a gold medal in the gi division, followed by another in the no-gi division later that day.

Now, the high school student ambitiously aims for the highest accolade in BJJ, recognition as an IBJJF World Champion. "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers young women much more than just self-defense skills," states Prof. Dorian Cartwright Esq., Head Coach of Ralph Gracie San Jose. "Katernia's achievements illustrate how BJJ fosters confidence, discipline, and mental resilience in teenage practitioners."

Kalivitis began her BJJ journey just over a year ago. Her 2024 tournament accomplishments include:

  • Gold Medal - Adult Division Gi Competition, 2024 Jiu-Jitsu World League Pan American Championships

  • Gold Medal - Adult Division No-Gi Competition, 2024 Jiu-Jitsu World League Pan American Championships

  • Gold Medal - Juvenile Open Division Gi Champion, 2024 BJJ Tour - Gilroy

  • Gold Medal - Juvenile Intermediate Division NoGi Champion, 2024 ADCC Open

  • Gold Medal - Juvenile Heavyweight Division Gi Champion, 2024 BJJ Tour - San Francisco

The high school junior skillfully manages her demanding training schedule at Pioneer High School, illustrating how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can positively influence various aspects of young women's lives. "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has taught me that size and strength aren't everything," Kalivitis remarks. "I am empowered most through technique, strategy, and dedication."

This achievement underscores the rising trend of teenage athletes excelling in adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions, particularly among young women. The sport continues to gain traction among female practitioners, offering:

- Enhanced self-confidence

- Physical fitness development

- Mental resilience building

- Strong community support

- Practical self-defense skills
